Perubahan iklim merupakan situasi yang saat ini kita hadapi dan tidak dapat ditawar lagi kecuali dengan meredam lajunya. Adalah dengan memahami proses- proses yang terjadi di alam, wawasan kita dapat dibuka tentang bagaimana dan mengapa iklim itu berubah.
Dari situ kita akan sadar bahwa secara alamiah iklim itu memang akan berubah walau tanpa campur tangan manusia. Dan, dengan adanya aktivitas manusia, berawal dari revolusi industri hingga kini, iklim berubah dengan drastis.
Mungkin semua orang tahu bahwa penyebab utama perubahan iklim adalah meningkatnya konsentrasi gas rumah kaca (GRK) di udara yang menyebabkan temperatur di permukaan bumi meningkat.
Hampir semua negara di dunia berusaha untuk menurunkan emisi GRK-nya masing-masing walau dengan perdebatan yang cukup alot mengenai besaran yang harus diturunkan. Dan, menurut hemat saya, hal tersebut cukup sulit karena banyak faktor yang harus dipantau dan dievaluasi, serta yang jelas harus ilmiah.
Kita mungkin paham bahwa hutan kita adalah paru-paru dunia dengan kemampuannya menyerap karbon dioksida (CO) sehingga kita berusaha untuk menjaga hutan agar tetap
Namun, belum banyak yang paham bahwa perairan kita yang sangat luas itu juga memiliki potensi dalam mengatur kesetimbangan CO di atmosfer. Potensinya adalah dapat sebagai penyimpan dan atau penyumbang CO. Tetapi, kita belum tahu persis potensi yang mana yang kita miliki.
Di sini saya sedikit mengulas bagaimana ekosistem perairan selain lautan, yaitu danau dan waduk, dan apa kaitannya dengan emisi GRK. Indonesia memiliki 521 danau alami, terbanyak di Asia Tenggara, dan lebih dari 100 waduk.
Danau dan waduk adalah ekosistem yang menerima input materi dari ekosistem daratan, termasuk di dalamnya karbon. Apabila materi tersebut adalah makhluk hidup atau sisa dari makhluk hidup, suatu saat materi tersebut akan terdegradasi menghasilkan inorganik karbon yang salah satunya adalah CO.
Memang benar, material organik tadi dapat terbenam di dasar danau, tetapi hampir semua danau yang ada di Indonesia dapat mengalami pengadukan sempurna sehingga CO dan material lainnya di dasar itu mampu kembali ke permukaan. Adanya aktivitas fotosintesis-respirasi memengaruhi CO di permukaan, tetapi tidak cukup signifikan karena keduanya berada cukup seimbang.
Lebih lanjut jika konsentrasi CO di lapisan permukaan air sangat tinggi dan jenuh, CO akan terlepas ke udara.
Secara global Cole dkk. (1994) menghitung bahwa sekitar 87 persen dari 4.665 danau—termasuk waduk—yang ada di dunia (sekitar 2 x 106 kilometer persegi) berpotensi menyumbang CO ke atmosfer dengan total kisaran 0,14 x 1.015 gram karbon per tahunnya. Namun, peran serta seluruh pihak, baik dari masyarakat, pemerhati maupun pemerintah sangatlah dibutuhkan dalam menyikapi isu perubahan iklim ini. Dan, menurut hemat saya, danau dan waduk adalah cermin keberhasilan usaha kita semua dalam memperbaiki kualitas lingkungan yang bermanfaat untuk menurunkan emisi GRK.
